• Daf is holding talks with major Japanese truck manufacturer Hino.
Cor Baan, chairman of the Daf management board, has flown to Tokyo.
Hino has confirmed that it is currently talking to Daf about joint ventures.
It is not likely that Daf would be bought by either Hino or the other big league Japanese truck maker, Nissan Diesel. Both corn panies are struggling in a stagnant domestic market and recently reported sharply reduced profits.
Falling domestic sales are forcing the major Japanese truck makers to look for ways to break into the European market.
However a closer arrangement is more likely with Mercedes-Benz. Talks began last month on the formation of a "strategic alliance".
