Britain's withdrawal from the Exchange Rate Mechanism is already affecting fuel prices. Esso has hiked diesel pump prices to 47.9p/litre (a rise of 6p a gallon).
MacGregor Move? • According to The Times, John MacGregor is one of the names in the frame to succeed Chancellor Norman Lamont should he be forced out by the Sterling crisis. MacGregor is a former chief secretary to the Treasury.
Tacho control
• The EC Commission is calling for tougher police controls on tachographs after 20 passengers were killed in a coach crash in Bavaria earlier this month. The driver had spent nearly 17 hours at the wheel.

• RTITB Services, the commercial reincarnation of the old RTITB quango, has lost responsibility for administering the National (Dangerous Substances) Driver Training Scheme. From October 1, the RHA takes over the reins.
Italian handout
• The EC will allow the Italian Government to subsidise development of Iveco's new engine and transmission series, codenamed Elena. Rome wants to give Iveco £60m in grants, equivalent to a quarter of the cost.
Balkan licence
• From this week, all exports to BosniaHerzegovina, Croatia and Macedonia must be accompanied by an EC licence to tighten up the sanctions against Serbia and Montenegro.
Production up • CV production rose last month to 12,437 — 6,253 were exported. Production for Jan-Aug rose 29% to 175,528.
