haulier Cyril Lane has won a full five-year 0 licence renewal for 14 vehicles and 14 trailers at a Cardiff public inquiry. Maintenance problems had previously led to the curtailment of the duration of the licence, and a two-year renewal.

For Lane, Geoffrey Williams told South Wales Deputy Licensing Authority Alan Cattell that a recent immediate prohibition had been imposed because of a crack in a trailer frame. Lane said the crack had appeared between inspections and had been repaired on the spot with mobile welding equipment.

It would not have been ap

parent to the driver during his daily check and it had possibly occured when steel coils had been dropped on to the trailer when it was being loaded. The maintenance system now in use was approved by the South Wales Traffic Area and was working well.

Agreeing that there had been maintenance problems in the past, Lane said it had reorganised its system. The company did all its own maintenance and also carried out maintenance for other operators, including BRS.

Renewing the licence, Cattell said that a recent report from the vehicle examiners had been favourable.
