Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A new method of cleaning trucks is being launched onto the UK market this month. The Uniscrub MW 150 is claimed to clean an articulated truck from stem to stern in less than five minutes.

Power from a single-cylinder Kubota diesel engine drives through the single rearsteering wheel, and spins the rotary brush at 600rpm. Hydraulics are used throughout the machine.

The brush has a vertical movement of one metre, tilts lr through the vertical and swings through 90°. It is held against the side of the vehicle by an llkg spring, which can be overridden by a hydraulic ram.

The machine can be targeted at the dirtiest parts of the vehicle, and cleaned to the operator's satisfaction. The operator is protected on three sides by tinted saftey glass.

The machine is being imported by RHW Enterprises, of Nuffield Road, St Ives Ind Est, Cambs, PE17 4BN. A full description will appear in another issue of Workshop. We are all set for an informative, stimulating and profitable day. While there is a charge for participation in the conference, entrance to the exhibition is free on both days.

Workshop will be previewing papers next month and reporting the debates later from the large European Truck Maintenance Conference held this year in Florence — November 22-25.

Technical sessions on the first working day, Monday, are: • Maintenance trends and training • Tomorrow's vehicles; build or buy; increased security; refrigeration; year 2000 • Fuel economy/aerodynamics; lower, lighter axle project; driver comfort Tuesday • Brakes and braking; EEC regs; round table Workshop sessions • Computers in workshops; lubricants; heavy-duty electrics • A common transport policy?

• Computer technology applied to road transport • Evaluation Attendance at the ETMC is free for all commercial and industrial vehicle users, and concessionary hotel rates have been negotiated. Registrations forms and further information are available from: ETMC Central Office, Jan Van Rijswijcklaan 166A, B-2020-Antwerp, Belgium (phone Antwerp 237 3627/8; telex 32042).

The biggest exhibition of garage equipment in the United Kingdom takes place in the meantime at Earls Court, London. This is the Automotive Trade Show (September 26October 1) previewed by Workshop on pages 21-23.

More than 300 trade stands continued an page 6

cover the garage equipment and commercial vehicle or car accessories. The show is open over the weekend.

A more high-tech show devoted to industry generally was held this month over four days at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham. This was the Design Engineering Show (DES) and its younger sister, Electronics in Engineering Design (EED).

The profile of the EEL), now an exhibition in its own right, ranged from programmable controllers, switches, motors, keyboards, connectors, actuators automation components counters to timers and so on.

MHH Engineering celebrated its 50th anniversary by putting together a range of tools for tightening bolts or screws to a specific torque and checking their tightness.

Bayer UK showed a selection of cockpit facias to demonstrate the "secret till lit" backlighting properties of Makrofol LT and DE.

The Heyco Manufacturing Company featured its range of nylon bushings and associated products designed to anchor, position, protect and insulate cables entering or leaving a chassis. Samples were available on the stand. Ratcliffe Springs, as a manufacturer of high-grade springs for the automotive and other sectors, demonstrated at DES how buyers can benefit from the latest technology. Technical staff designed springs on the stand.

Show debut for lime Trac

The Frankfurt Motor Show this month saw the debut of Time Trac, a diesel engine timing system from Stanadyne Automotive Products Group. The system has a start-ofinjection sensor together with Stanadyne's timing meter.

The acquisition by T&N (formerly Turner & NewaU) of AE last December has created a formidable automotive products group; this year T&N announced an additional 12.3 million investment in Brico and AMAC.

Several T&N company exhibited components for diesels at Frankfurt. Glacier Metal, for instance showed Glacier AS124 for turbos developing a too hostile environment for traditional crankshaft bearings. It will feature in engine manufacture by some firms next year.

And a date for the diary is the Scottish Motor Show at the Scottish Exhibition Centre, Glasgow, November 14-22.
