• Volvo plans to spend some $100 million (266 million) on its American commercial vehicle plants as part of a major USA expansion programme following the recent formation of Volvo GM Truck Corporation.
Volvo Truck Corporation president Sten Langenius says that the money will be spent mainly at the Volvo White assembly plant at New River Valley, Virginia, and at the cab plant at Orville, Ohio which will become a full assembly plant for GMC Brigadier heavy trucks.
Some 76% of the new company, Volvo GM Truck Corporation, is owned by Volvo. It begins trading at the start of next year, and from that date all White, and heavy-duty GMC trucks in the USA will be badged WhiteGMC.
Volvo GM will continue to market trucks built by the Volvo Truck Corporation in Sweden under the Volvo badge. • Continental police forces have ignored pleas from Euro MP Bill Newton-Dunn for help in tracing trucks stolen in Britain.
Speaking at the European Parliament in Strasbourg last week, Newton-Dunn claimed that the almost daily disappearance of vehicles — which is costing UK hauliers . nearly 24 million a year — is believed to be organised from a base in South London.
Scotland Yard has set up a special unit to hunt the gang, which appears to specialise in stealing tippers, artics and self-loading vehicles.
Stolen lorries have been traced to Northern Europe and Eire, but the MEP for Lincolnshire believes there is also a steady traffic in stolen vehicles and parts to other EEC countries.
Newton-Dunn says he has raised the matter in the European Parliament, but so far with no response.
