Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Following the recent horrific accidents on the M6 and M4 motorways, calls are being made once again to fit speed governors on trucks and coaches. This is not the answer. Drivers must be made to pay the price for driving at excessive speeds, ignoring mandatory speed limits through contraflows for instance, or driving too closely to the vehicle in front.

When will people understand that this style of driving really is killing others-day in, day out. Licence endorsements and fines are no longer a deterrent — these are regarded by most as mere inconvenience. Sooner or later an immediate ban will be the only answer to this problem.

We should all be very clear that the effects of dangerous and careless driving are no different to driving while under the influence of alcohol: both kill and maim.

Now is the time for the police and the magistrates to get to grips with these selfish lunatics before the next major tragedy.

How much longer will we go on paying lip service to road safety?
