• Bus deregulation has resulted in a dangerous decline in safety and maintenance standards, claims Ron Todd, the Transport and General Workers Union general secretary.
He claims that deregulations has led to increased levels of stress for drivers, and declining bus safety as older vehicles are used.
The recent Trades Union Congress in Blackpool unanimously called for substantial public investment in an integrated, publicly accountable transport system.
• Walter Alexander has chosen the vehicles it will display at next month's Coach and Bus Transport Travel and Allied Industries show at the National Exhibi tion Centre at Birmingham.
They are an 'IV Type double-decker built for Western Scottish on a Volvo MOM Citybus chassis, an 'N' Type single-deck bus built on a Leyland Tiger chassis for Ulsterbus, an allaluminium-bodied Dodge Mk2 50 Series midibus, and an all-aluminium body on a Mercedes 709 D/42 chassis.
