Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Defects which are "liable to cause significant risks to the driver, occupants of the vehicle or other road users" and cause vehicle manufacturers to recall vehicles are reported to the Department of Transport under a voluntary code of practice.

The DTp publishes these recall campaigns every six months, and a summary of the latest bulletin is shown here. It applies to recall campaigns launched between January and June this year, and refers to goods vehicles, and LPV (large passenger vehicles.)

Goods vehicles

Model: Leyland Daf Roadtrain 6x2 Identification and build dates: First five characters of chassis VIN code are SBLM5, and the last seven in the range are AG70448 to FG71153, from January 1986 to June 1986.

Defects: 1, Air valve mounting bosses on air reservoirs cracking and loosing air pressure; 2, Propshaft may foul the air reservoir, resulting in failure of the reservoir or its mountings; 3, Secondary brake system may be activated because of incorrect signal pipe connections to the rear service brake reservoir.

Remedy: 1, Remount air valves on the chassis; 2, Remount air reservoir away from the propshaft; 3, Check and correct any signal pipe connections on the service brakes.

Number of vehicles involved: 194.

Model: Dacia Duster Roadster/GLX Identification and import dates: Vehi des fitted with Weller wheels imported August 1984, December 1984, April 1985 and November 1985.

Defect: Wheels develop cracks around the mounting holes.

Remedy: Replace the Weller wheels with ones of improved specification.

Number of vehicles: 250.

Model: Iveco Ford Transcontinental fitted with cam gear steering.

Build dates: July 1979 to January 1984. Defect: Possible failure of upper steering arm.

Remedy: Fit revised steering arm and a new spindle body.

Number of vehicles: 731.

Model: Mitsubishi L300 van/pick-up. Identification numbers and build dates: Chassis Nos 6100002-6100103, 6101353-6102280 and 6500011-6508357, between April 1980 to September 1981. Defect: Failure of seat belt stalk due to failure of wire strands.

Remedy: Replace seat belt stalks with ones of improved design.

Number of vehicles: 2596.

Model: Mazda B2000 and B2200 Identification numbers and build dates: B2000 500032 to 513674 and B2200 500001 to 500450, February 1985 to 13 October 1986.

Defect: Rear wheels can lock because load sensing valve allows excessive pressure to rear brakes when at upper range of mounting angles.

Remedy: Adjust angle of load sensing valve to revised specifications.

Number of vehicles: 2000.

Model: Leyland Daf Roadtrain 6X2 and Constructor 8x4. Identification numbers and build dates: First five characters of chassis VIN code are SBSM5 and SBS A8, and the last seven in the range are BF 71730 to AG 70590. February 1985 to January 1986.

Defect: Steering box and drop arm splines foul before the taper joining the drop arm to the sector shaft becomes bound.

Remedy: Fit a modified drop arm.

Number of vehicles: 786.

Model: Freight Rover Sherpa 300-Series petrol engine.

Identification numbers and build dates: 265763 to 272631. March 1986 to September 1986.

Defect: Air filter case may chafe steel brake pipe during start up.

Remedy: Re-route pipe, replacing if necessary.

Number of vehicles: 1000.

Model: VW LT Identification numbers and build dates: 2811E003513 to 28H1H1008972 and 29HH003513 to 29HH008972. September 1986 to November 1986.

Defect: Leaking blanking plug in upper part of carburettor.

Remedy: Insert additional blanking plug, or replace carburettor.

Number of vehicles: 201.

Model: Leyland Daf 4 x 2 Roadrunner. Identification numbers and build dates: First five characters of the chassis VIN code are SBLK4 and the last seven are BG49608 to BH58024. February 1986 to February 1987.

Defect: Air trapped in hydraulic brake system.

Remedy: Bleed system.

Number of vehicles: 2082.

Model: Bedford CF97000 Identification numbers and build dates: FV609869 to HV607384. March 1985 to December 1986.

Defect: Automotive Product front suspension lower ball joint sealing allows ingress of water.

Remedy: Replace joints with those from another manufacturer.

Number of vehicles: 7206.

Model: Leyland Daf ABS system.

Identification numbers and build dates: 235402 to 290113. 17 December 1982 to 12 November 1986. Defect: Intermittent signal from the ABS wheel sensors causes a short duration reduction in service brake efficiency at low speed (around lOmph).

Remedy: Replace wheel sensor connectors with weather proof items, and change to the latest type of control box.

Number of vehicles: 160.

Model: Iveco 79.13 and 79.14.

Identification numbers and build dates: 79.13 Chassis Cab 350183 to 352563, Van 550036 to 550400. 79.14 Chassis Cab 350010 to 361078, Van 550010 to 553011, Bus chassis 050048 to 051025. Build dates May 1983 to December 1986.

Defect: Handbrake cable comes away from actuating lever in brake drum. Remedy: Modify the connection of the cable to the actuating lever. Number of vehicles: 1439.

Model: Ford Transit LCY with twin rear wheels.

Vehicle identification numbers and build dates: GL, GY, GS, GT, GJ, GU, GM, GP, GB, GR, GA and GG. 27 January 1986 to 26 November 1986 for the Genk plant, and 27 January 1986 to 4 December 1986 for Southampton plant production.

Defect: Wheels can come loose and fall off.

Remedy: Fit inner wheel cones, remove paint from wheel stud bosses and replace worn or damaged parts.

Number of vehicles: 15713.

Model: ERF E-Series all tractor units and draw bar.

Build dates: 1 April 1986 to 31 August 1986.

Defect: Base plate distortion of Bendix 56 hand control valve causing partial trailer brake application. Recall supercedes action taken under recall number R1986/ 73, which was ineffective.

Remedy: Replace existing valves with re-designed ones.

Number of vehicles: 1153.

Model: ERF E-Series.

Build dates: 23 October 1986, to 13 April 1987.

Defect: Bursting of flexible hoses to the brake actuators because of incorrect curing of hose reinforcing material.

Remedy: Change hoses with suspect date codes. Number involved: 1077.

Model: Leyland Daf FA 1700 and FA 1900 with 122N front axle. Identification numbers and build dates: 294467 to 298106. 12 February to 27 April 1987.

Defect: Front hub bearing lock nut tab washer not bent up.

Remedy: Examine, adjust if necessary and bend up washer.

Number of vehicles: 166.
