IT IS POINTLESS to consider the individual county lorry route plans now being put forward under the Dykes Act, the Freight Transport Association decided this week.
And until a national decision on lorry routeing is taken the FTA is telling local authorities that it will not discuss their schemes.
This hard line has been taken "reluctantly," a spokesman said, and the Association is urging the new Transport Minister to act as quickly as possible on a national policy.
The FTA recognises. that local authbrities have a statutory duty to comply with the Heavy Commercial Vehicles (Controls and Regulations) Act 1973 by January I next year. But it believes that this can be fulfilled by use of localised restrictions. "There is, however, no requirement for local authorities to devise countywide plans."
The FTA is concerned that the cumulative effect of ,such plans will lead by default to a piecemeal plan which will not meet the needs of operators, authorities or the community.
