We!ford

Welford Truck Bodies Ltd, Hainge Road, Tividale, Watley, Worcs 869 21119.

AN ALL-ALUMINIUM curtainsided canopy trailer with a platform length of 11.7m (38ft Sin) can be seen on the WeIford stand. It features Dunlop trailing spring-beam air suspension with rolling diaphragm bellows and Rubery Owen-Rockwell axles. The aluminium main frame is made up from 230 x 150mm (9 x 5.9in) "T" sections welded up to form an "I" beam.

Full-width cross-bearers are threaded through the main beams to support the heavy -duty special side rave section with the aluminium floor planks laid across the frame and welded into place. The front and rear bulkheads and roof structure are integral with the main frame.

Curtain tracks'are fitted within the aluminium cant rail and they extend forward around the front bulkhead to allow the curtains to be pulled clear of the sides for unobstructed side loading. The plated gross trailer weight is 28 tonnes (27.6 tons)..

Also on the Welford stand is an all-aluminium step-frame skeletal trailer designed to carry 20ft ISO containers where loading heights are critical. The aluminium main frame is made up of extruded "T" section top and bottom members welded into an "I" beam with spacers added in the main deck centre to form a deep beam which Welford claims gives the stiffness of an equivalent steel structure but with a considerable saving in weight.

Torsional stiffness is provided by tubular cross-members with channel section web stiffeners at the stress points. As steel is used for the fifth-wheel rubbing plate, care has been taken to ensure that electrolytic corrosion cannot take place.

In order to assist the drainage of tank containers when discharging viscous fluids, an air raise device is incorporated at the front bolster using a Dunlop air bellows assembly coupled into the trailer air system. With the front twistlocks disengaged, the front of the container can be raised 250mm (9.9in) which, with 100mm (3.9in) of slope built into the trailer, gives a total container slope of 350mm (13.8in).

York

York Trailer Co Ltd, Yafforth Road, Northallerton, Yorks DL7 BUE.

YORK's latest Lodeck platform trailer forms the basis for its new Sidewinder being introduced for the first time at this year's Show.

The Sidewinder consists of a curtain sided trailer on which the curtains can be rolled up to allow access to the load space. In order to achieve vertical and horizontal tension in the curtains they are cut on the bias from heavy-duty polyester which allows them to be fastened in one operation without buckles or straps, using a one-piece full length clip and tensioned by turning a handle. This gives the Sidewinder load restraint capabilities.

The roof of the trailer is made of pre-stressed aluminium and there is only one centre support on the centre line of the trailer. Front and rear bulkheads are made of reinforced steel framework with aluminium alloy panels, The Lodeck trailer which is equipped with Hobo suspension — standard on all Lodecks — is plated for 38.6 tonnes (38 tons) GCW and shown with the latest York landing gear with cushion feet. The overall length of the trailer is 12.2m (40ft) and is 2.5m (8f1 2in) wide.

Hobo suspension, the dualpurpose lifting axle spring suspension, is demonstrated at the Show on a tanker running gear assembly. The system is designed to raise the first axle of a tandem trailer 178mm (7 in) from the ground using two air bellows. In this situation the leading axle's suspension is brought solidly against the chassis thus locking out the suspension's normal load equalisation. The tandem suspension• is cross-linked and is completely non-reactive.

On show at Earls Court on the tanker chassis is the York model RG5H tandem axle running gear, with axle centres at 1.4m (4ft Sin) but it is also available with axles at 2m (6ft 8in) centres.

Last of the trailers on show from York is a Freightmaster semi-trailer van. This is a frameless aluminium van which is also equipped with Hobo and it is designed for 34.5 tonnes (34 tons) gcw operation. An allwelded base assembly has "I" beam cross-members spaced at 302mm (1ft) centres. Side walls are 1.6mm (16 gauge) higl tensile aluminium alloy whil the roof is a single alloy she( bonded under tension to if roof bows and riveted to the car rails on the outside of the carg area.

The interior of the van w accommodate two metric palle side by side and access through a rear door frarr designed to match the interic width. To load roof high cargo, rear head rail raises the doi height level with the undersic of the roof. Flooring is made 25mm (1 in) thick laminate hardwood and the interior fully lined with plydoor recessE between the wall pillars.

A York Airofoil and Wizzale electrically operated landir gear are also fitted. The trail has a length of 12.2m (40. with an interior capacity 72.4cum (2560cuft).
