Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Ulsterbus chief Mr Werner Heubeck is to meet union officials to discuss economies which may have to be made to offset the big loss in traffic because of the troubles in Northern Ireland.

Cuts in services which may follow seem likely to result in a lay-off of busmen. So serious has been the company's loss in revenue that a saving in the region of about £500,000 is believed necessary.

Most likely to be hit are evening services in the periphery of Belfast and Londonderry, where the number of passengers has dropped steeply. But concentration also seems certain on other loss-making routes and possibly on school services.
