Safe Use of Abrasive Wheels 171E booklet " Safety in the Use of Abrasive Wheels" (New Series No. 4) has been revised and reprinted to take account of the recommendations contained in the European Safety Code. The European code of practice has recently been adopted by many countries.

The number of accidents caused by wheel breakages, and the circumstances in which they have occurred, reveal that most could have been avoided by an appreciation of the risks and of the safety precautions necessary.

The booklet is illustrated by photographs and diagrams and describes the characteristics of abrasive wheels and deals with the safety aspects of their use, storage and mounting. Because the risk of breakage is inherent in every abrasive wheel, protection against " bursts is necessary: wheel guards are regarded as essential. Types of guard. materials for their construction and additional precautions which can be provided are described. Advice is given on precautions which should be taken to prevent injuries resulting from contact with a wheel while it is in motion.

Numerous eye injuries are caused by particles thrown off from the wheel or from the work being ground. The booklet urges the use of suitable goggles or effective screens, or of both.

Although not intended to interpret the legal requirements of the Factories Acts, the booklet lists the parts of the Acts and Regulations affecting the use of abrasive wheels.

Additive for Screen Washers AFTER carrying out a great deal of research into the composition of the greasy film deposited on windscreens, Alexander Engineering Co. has produced a new additive for screen washers. It has been found that regular use of the additive in the screen washers not only reduces the amount of time that it is necessary to operate the wipers to obtain a clear screen. but also that the wiper blade rubbers gradually become repellent to the deposits forming the film.

During winter months it is recommended that 25 per cent methylated spirit is added to the washer bottle to prevent freezing.
