Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AN improvement of 100 per cent in brake lining life on the Bedford VAL twin-steer p.s,v, is claimed by the makers following modifications to the system that have increased the total lining area from 499 sq. in. to 646 sq. in. This has been provided by an increase in width of the front brake from 3 in. to 4 in. and a marginal increase in diameter from 12 in. to 12.5 in., the rear brake lining now having a width of 51 in. in place of the former 4-2 in. The diameter of the rear drums remains at 13 in.

A new fade-resisting material is used for the linings, and two-leading-shoe brake units are now fitted to all six wheels of the vehicle, whereas leading-and-trailingshoe units were originally employed. Lining area of the front brakes has been increased from 271 sq. in. to 372 sq. in., whilst area of the rear lining is now 273 sq. in. compared with an original area of 228 sq. in„ which represents increments of 37 per cent and 19 per cent respectively. The thickness of the front lining has been increased from 0.25 in. to 0.312 in. whilst the thickness of the rear lining is 0.375 in. The rear drum thickness has been increased from 0.47 in, to 018 in..
