Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WILE the conveyor-belt method of discharging meat from ships into insulated vans was welcomed by road hauliers, they considered that all the benefits were with the shipowners. This view was stated by Mr. R. A. C. Smith, who presided at the 93rd annual general meeting of the Liverpool Cart and Motor OwnersAssociation (sub-area of the Road Haulage Association) last week.

He said meal-carrying, members had held many meetings with Mersey Docks and Harbour Board. the Port Employers'. Association and the Transport and General Workers' Union on the problem, which started when the union asked for certain safeguards and for vehicle loading to be performed by dock workers. It ended with a demand for more-pay when the endless belt was in use. While tile hauliers agreed that vehicles were loaded quicket, they found that discharge at cold stores remained the same. Hence the extra wages required would become an additional burden on members without there being any increased productivity.

Mr. Smith called attention to prosecutions which could have had serious repercussions on members whose vehicles were used to transport goods to and from warehouses in the Bootle area. Several drivers-had been summoned for causing unnecessary obstruction whilst waiting to load or unload at warehouses facing a very wide roadway and so situated that standing vehicles did not hinder the free flow of traffic. As conviction would have been a serious matter for other drivers in a similar position, the association organi/ed a defence and lodged an appeal which was successful. The court decided there was no case to answer.
