THE East Midland Licensing Authority, in giving permission to Nottingham Transport Department to increase certain fares (The Commercial Motor, last week), has commended them for taking the opportunity to simplify the fare structure.

In announcing his decision, the Authority said he would not be justified in refusing the application on the ground that the committee of inquiry into the undertaking had not yet reported. This was a point made during the hearing by some objectors.

It is estimated that tht increases will bring in an extra £79,000 a year. On this basis, a surplus of £7,500 is expected at the end of the year.

LORRY EARNED 12,315 LAST YEAR WHEN Mr. G. P. Heal, Cheddar, VY applied to the Western Licensing Authority, on Monday, for a B licence for an additional vehicle, he stated that in 1953 one lorry operated by two men earned £2,315. He had to hire another haulier, but this was difficult as he lived five miles away.

Applicant's business had risen recently through gaining work from a Bristol cattle-food concern. A representative of British Road Services said that B.R.S. had suitable vehicles available, but a witness of the Bristol company stated that they needed someone to work for them regularly and who would be available at short notice.

The application was successful.
