THIRTY-EIGHT different types of trailer and semi-trailer, together with supplementary exhibits, are displayed at the Commercial Motor Show at Earls Court by I I of Britain's leading manufacturers in this field. Operators in nearly every sphere of transport will find models designed for their work, and this stand-by-stand review describes the whole range of products on show.

ALPERSON Stand 22 Alperson Products, Ltd.. The Avenue, Newmarket, Suffolk. L'XI-IIBITING for the first time, the makers of the Sprite range of caravans are showing a mobile office trailer. Its equipment includes two desks, wardrobe, two bench seats upholstered in Rexine, a solid-fuel stove, and toilet compartment with sink.

A steel filing cabinet, three tubularsteel chairs, typewriter and telephone are included for demonstration purposes. With a headroom of 6 ft. 3 in., the outfit is 16 ft. long, 7 ft. wide, and 8 ft. 4 in. high.

B.T.C. Stand 129

British Trailer Co., Ltd., Farm Lane, London, S.W.6. THE model W.1107 semi-trailer for 12-ton loads is the largest exhibit on the stand. The straight frame is 22 ft. long and 7 ft. 3 in. wide. Coupling gear is of the B.T.C.-S.A.E. type and the Girling brakes are vacuumoperated.

Special bodywork for drums is mounted on a 10-ton flat semi-trailer, which has a pair of 1-ft.-diameter jockey wheels at the front which can be raised or lowered by a crankoperated screw.

A spirit tank trailer of 1,200-gallon capacity is mounted at three points to the two-member frame, which is constructed in rolled-steel channel. The ball-bearing turntable is totally enclosed. The towbar is of the Y type.

Completing this company's display is a skid-mounted transportable dispensary cabin for construction or drilling camps. It is of all-metal fabrication and interior fittings can be provided to suit individual requirements.

BROCKHOUSE Stand 116 J. Brockhouse and Co., Ltd., 23 Hanover Square, London, W.I. THE coupling gear of a 4-ton semi./ trailer shown by this exhibitor allows the tractor to approach the semitrailer within an angle of 30° on each side of the longitudinal axis. The rear platform is 11 ft. long and the loading height is 3 ft. 3+ in.

Built to British Road Services' specification, a 10-ton flat-platform semi-trailer has an S.A.E.-S.M.M.T. king-pin coupling, and the retractable undercarriage is of the Brockhouse winder type. The platform is made of West African lightweight hardwood.

In the light class, the company show a 15-cwt. and a 10-cwt. trailer.

CARRIMORE Stand 114 Carrimore Six Wheelers, Ltd., London, N.12.

PROBABLY the most interesting exhibit is a special semi-trailer built for the transport of cars. It has two decks, each of which can contain two cars. The upper platform is operated by a parallel-link action, so that it can be lowered to the ground for loading, power being supplied by hydraulic rams driven from a power take-off.

In transit, the upper deck is secured by four drop-end pins fitted into support brackets, and the cars are anchored by chains.

This concern also display a dropframed 10-ton semi-trailer with

detachable a vehicle designed for carrying machinery.

A crank-framed 8-ton semi-trailer for shuttle services has Quickfit coupling gear and a retractor turntable. It is fitted with a body that is lined inside to give a smooth surface for the transport of clothing supported on rails. The loading height is 1 ft. 9 in.

ACRANKED semi-trailer of 25-ton capacity, as built for the Iraq Petroleum Co., is seen here. It is arranged to couple to different types of tractor fitted with heavy automatic fifth-wheel attachments.

The rear axle is held in position by a nut which can be removed so that the axle can be withdrawn to facilitate loading. Rocking of the axle to maintain even weight distribution is permitted by oscillation of the shaft in its bearings, which are protected against the entry of sand and dirt.

A 10-ton semi-trailer designed to B.R.S. requirements is displayed. Coupling is automatic with S.A.E.S.M.M.T. king-pin and hinged support legs.

A hydraulic suspension bogie for a 120-140-ton trailer contains many notable features. It has six suspension units, each of which transmits an equal proportion of load to a rocking axle. Each axle is carried at the base of a piston in a cylinder ,:ontaining oil, and each cylinder is linked with its twin by large pipes to provide load compensation.

Pumps driven by electric motors provide power for jacking and steering. Current is derived either from a dynamo or mains supply. All wheels have two-leading-shoe hydraulic brakes, the master cylinders being actuated by air pressure from either the tractor or handwheels.

DIXON-BATE Stand 126 B. Dixon-Bate, Ltd., Chester. TRAILERS for loads up to 3 tons are I displayed by this company, their heaviest model being constructed for the transport of cable drums. It is completely new in design and a low floor level is obtained by the incorporation of four-wheel independent suspension, Flexitor rubber units being used. The model AC two-wheeled trailer is for 16-20-cwt. loads and has been designed for use in conjunction with the Austin Champ cross-country

vehicle. It is strongly built for overseas service. A 220-gallon water-tank trailer is also made for export; its chassis is similar to that of the AC.

Two tool trailers are displayed. One is an 8-cwt. type widely used in this country and the other an 18-cwt. model designed originally for employment on oilfields.

The remaining exhibit is a mobile office. It has four independently sprung wheels, an arrangement which not only permits a low floor level, but also confers stability when the trailer is parked on uneven ground, so that stands need not be used.

DYSON Stand 33 R. A. Dyson and Co., Ltd., 76-80 Grafton Street, Liverpool, 8.

A HEAVY-DUTY semi-trailer for 1. oilfields use is the largest Dyson exhibit. Its capacity is 35-40 tons. The front neck is specially long, so that the semi-trailer may be coupled to either a fouror six-wheeled tractor. With a front dolly, the vehicle can be used as a four-wheeled trailer.

The Dyson 15-ton semi-trailer has a frame of high-tensile steel, the pressings being I ft. 3 in, deep and 31 in. wide. There are two axles and the brake drums are of heavy construction. The suspension system, incorporating Akulon bushes, which require no lubrication, is highly flexible and suitable for either road work or running over uneven surfaces. Bodywork is of duralumin.

An 8-ton four-wheeled trailer for the bulk transport of loose loads, such as grain or cement, has two Yewco hoppers equipped for pneumatic discharging. Contents may be unloaded up to a height of 40 ft. into storage. Front and rear springs are interchangeable, and the vacuum-servo and hand brakes are combined in a unit.

Tandem-axle running gear, including rubber-mounted springs, complete this manufacturer's display. The equipment is designed for tanks. EAGLE Stand 98 Eagle Engineering Co., Ltd., Eagle Works, Warwick.

WITH capacity for 1,000 tins of VV biscuits, a 4-5-ton drop-frame semi trailer is seen on the Eagle stand. The chassis is constructed of rolled-steel channel and has a retractable undercarriage and jockey wheels. The box bodywork is of composite construction and has rubber-sealed Perspex roof lights There are doors at the side and rear, whilst at the front is a compartment for empty tins.

A semi-trailer for quarry work is shown. The tipping body is 12 ft. long and 9 ft. 6 in. wide, and is unloaded by means of overhead tackle. This vehicle is strongly built, the floor and sloping sides of the body being of laminated construction with a spillage plate at the front.

A platform body measuring 15 ft. long by 7 ft. wide is mounted on a 5-6-ton four-wheeled trailer. The floor is of hardwood with light-alloy chock rails, and there is a 2-ft,-high headboard, Girling brakes are fitted to this and the other Eagle exhibits.

HANDS Stand 26 Hands (Letchworth), Ltd., New lcknield Way, Letchworth.

A SPECIAL three-section drop-sided

body with hoop sticks and canvas is shown mounted on a Hands 12-ton straight-framed semi-trailer designed for home and export markets, Other bodywork designs can be provided. The semi-trailer may be supplied in lengths from 20-30 ft.

Main members are of steel-alloy pressings 1 ft. 3 in. deep and the kingpin is of S.A.E. standard pattern. The H-section axle is connected to a hanger bracket by two radius rods, one of which is adjustable. The retractable wheel supports have a wide track for stability, but screw gear can be fitted as an extra.

For concentrated loads of up to 10 tons, the company offer a low-loading trailer 25 ft. long by 8 ft. wide. It has the Hands patented oilbath turn table. Another 10-ton outfit on the stand has a BonaIlack light-alloy body and G-type universal forecarriage. Specialty developed as a basis for mobila-shop bodywork, the Hands KSL.4 4-5-ton dropframe semi-trailer has a floor height of only 10 in. The length of the example displayed is 19 ft., although greater dimensions are available. The KSL.4 is shown with Karrier 11K-type coupling gear, but other types may be specified.

Other Hands exhibits are a working Safe-Lock fifth-wheel assembly, a 6,000lb. recovery winch, and a sectioned oilhath turntable assembly. A model shows the features of the compensating pole-wagon brake cable. The upper ramp of the Carri more car transporter, displayed on Stand 114, can be let down to near ground level to facilitate loading. The tractor is an Austin.

MULTI WHEELERS Stand 56 Multiwheelers (Commercial Vehicles), Ltd., Roxeth Green Avenue, South Harrow.

THERE are two models on this stand, I one a 14-ton semi-trailer and the other a 10-ton six-wheeled trailer. The larger model is intended for carrying machinery or cable drums and has a heavy full-width frame of welded construction.

Length is about 25 ft. and width 7 ft. 6 in., the main platform being stepped down to a height of 3 ft. 2 in. when laden. The front platform is 6-ft. long and carries a Thompson 4-ton winch.

The 10-tonner is a low-loading outfit 18 ft. 6 in. long by 7 ft. 5 in. wide. The main platform is 12 ft. 6 in. long and the height when laden is 3 ft. I in.

TASKERS Stand 107 Taskers of Andover (1932), Ltd., A ndover.

IN an impressive display of vehicles I from 5-20-ton capacity, the biggest outfit is specially designed for carrying loads such as boilers and the platform is made low to facilitate the negotiation of low bridges. It is suitable for sideor end-loading.

An 11-ton straight-frame semi-trailer has four wheels mounted in pairs on separately oscillating axles, an arrangement which gives good weight distribution on bad roads. The body has deep sides and the headboard is 5 ft. high to accommodate bulky loads.

On the Taskers 10-ton semi-trailer, the wheels are independently sprung and have effective spring centres at track width. Stability when high loads are being transported is good. An 8-ton semi-trailer for distributed loads has a flat body 20 ft. Tong and a headboard.

A 4-ton two-wheeled cable-drum carrier can accommodate drums up to 7 ft. 6 in. in diameter and 3 ft. 8 in. wide. The frame is tapered towards the front and open at the rear. The wheels are independently sprung. A 5-ton four-wheeled trailer is shown in chassis form. It is suitable for a 13-ft long body.
