The fact that the portable weighing machines used for weighing the lorries in question were of the same type as those which figured in proceedings at Doncaster over a year ago, when a large number of charges of alleged overloading was withdrawn, was admitted during the hearing of similar summonses at Snaith West Riding Police Court, last week.
During the Doncaster proceedings it transpired that the weighing machines were operated by West Riding County Surveyor's Department, but the Snaith prosecutions showed that they are now used by West Riding Weights and Measures Department.
At Snaith, Mr. S. E. Pitts, solicitor to the Yorkshire Area of A.R.O., who appeared for two defendant firms, challenged the accuracy of the machines --an issue which was also raised at Doncaster—but the magistrates decided to convict. Each of the two firms was fined £3 10s. for " permitting," one driver was fined El, and the other ariver 10s.
