Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

which may affect hauliers all over the country, was heard, last week, before Mr. A, F.

Nicholson, Western Licensing Authority, at Bristol. The application was made by H. W. Hawker, Ltd., Bristol, for 11 additional Alicence vehicles (44 tons) in connection with the company's trunk services between Bristol, Lancashire and the South Coast.

The vexed questions of the trader's right to chose the form of transport which best suits his business, and of what evidence is required to justify a change from rail to road, are involved.

Mr. E. Gilbert Woodward opposed the application on behalf of the G.W. aria L.M.S. Railways, and Mr. Charles S. Dunbar objected for Hurst and Payne, Ltd.

Mr. H. W. Hawker, managing director, giving evidence of the expansion in the company's business, said that there was an increasing demand for suitable vehicles to carry goods on feeder services.

Several customers also gave evidence to the effect that the demand for perishable and other goods required speedy delivery from factories, which called for the use of road transport.

In view of the importance of the application, decision has been deferred. •
