Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

At Nottingham, last Friday, a railway advocate accused Trent Carriers, Ltd., of endeavouring to enter the road-haulage industry, not as a canal carrier, but as a road haulier. This charge was denied.

The Trent concern, it was stated, could at once become' a haulage company, if it wished to do so, by opening a' road-transport clearing house and hiring lorries, but instead was honour log the rail-canal agreement. The company carries goods on the River Trent from Hull to Nottingham, and distributes them by road within 60 miles of the latter city.

Application was made for an A licence for an additional vehicle for service in Nottingham, and difficulty of hiring vehicles was stressed. Rail facilities were said to be unsuitable,• and the applicant's hand, it was added, had been forced by the railways having reduced rates to so low a level that Trent Carriers, Ltd., could not affoid to pay hauliers' charges.

The East Midland Licensing • Authority reserved his decision.
