If CM had been around in 1896 it's a racing cert the Hawk would have roadtested the little beauty pictured here, the 4hp Daimler, which can lay claim to being the first truck ever built. Earlier this month Mercedes-Benz brought this replica over to its Milton Keynes HQ for inspection by Lord Montagu of Beaulieu and Mercedes boss Hans Tauscher.
Fine as this machine undoubtedly was in its day, it is clear that its optimistic designer did not anticipate inclement weather inconveniencing the driver or spoiling the load carried on its open plan body.
