• Waste Management International is promising more work for UK drivers as it prepares to boost its waste paper business. Group finance director Bo Gabrielson says business is looking up after UK waste paper volumes fell in the third quarter of the year. He does not reveal separate UK sales and profit figures, but confirms that the downturn forced UK Waste to lay off "a small number of drivers". WMI Group's UK arm reacted by putting together more routes and using its trucks more efficiently, says Gabrielson.
Pre-tax profits rose 7.9% to £42.8m on turnover up 3.6% to £309.7m. However, a global decline in the price of the solid wastes the group transports is putting pressure on sales.
