Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Iveco Ford has revealed the next stage of its new Cargo programme, covering rigids from 11-15 tonnes GVW.

The heavier rigids, which will be joined by lightweight tractors up to 32.5 tonnes GCW, follow on naturally from the 6-10 tonne Cargos launched this week (see pages 46-51 for a detailed report).

Iveco engines are used throughout, including a powerful new charge-cooled 7.7-litre diesel. This will increase speculation about the specification of future heavy Cargo derivatives, and in particular whether Cummins engines will be retained.

Speaking before the launch, Iveco Ford's managing director Alan Fox insisted that new Cargos above 15 tonnes "are not imminent" and that no decision had yet been taken on the future use of proprietary engines. But it is believed that the next generation of heavy Cargos will get Iveco power units complete with Bosch's EDC electronically controlled fuel injection.

In this case, Iveco may choose to supply customer's who want alternative drivelines through Seddon Atkinson (now part of the Iveco group).

The 11-15-tonners use the same cab as the lighter Cargos, but with uprated running gear including a stronger frame, full air brakes with front discs and rear drums, and Rockwell drive axles.

Two engines are offered in four ratings: the 5.9-litre unit in lightly turbocharged (105kW/141hp), turbocharged (130kW/174hp) and chargecooled (167kW/223hp) forms; and the new charge-cooled 7.7litre engine (196kW/263hp).

The higher rated units are intended primarily for artic and drawbar applications, and a nine

speed transmission can be specified as an alternative to the basic five or six-speed gearboxes.

Consistent with the phased introduction of the lighter Cargos, the 11-15-tonners will in itially be produced in parallel with the existing model. Pilot production is already underway, with dealer availability expected early in 1992. Driving impressions will appear in a future issue.
