A FREE-WHEELING front hub for Land-Rovers is being manufactured by the /A Barton Motor Co., Ltd., Hyde Park Corner, Plymouth, under licence from the Fre-Lock Corporation of America.

The units are easy to fit as.they form a direct replacement for the-spIined end-caps on the 'outside of the normal hub. Similarly solined, they fit over the drive shafts and by a simple pawl-and-ratchet arrangement allow the front hubs to be disconnected from the transmission at all times when only rear-wheel drive is engaged.

_Better Dampers IMPROVEMENTS have been made by Girling, Ltd., Kings Road, Birmingham, 11, to their dampers of 1-n in; bore for light vehicles. They have a new, • rebound valve in which the setting is obtained by means of a coil spring bearing in a shim valve, and a new base valve in which the setting is by means of a coil spring acting upon a sleeve valve.

Temperature fade is stated to be largely eliminated by the valve characteristics, and an improved drain tube swaged in relation to double baffles to prevent temporary loss of setting because of aeration. The dampers are of welded and riveted construction, and are being painted grey to distinguish them from older models in green or black.

Improved Primer IMPROVEMENTS have been made to .1 the Polar engine primer made by M.G.A. Industries, Ltd., 11 Forest Road, Loughton, Essex. The capsule chamber has a detachable base to facilitate cleaning, and nylon tube is now used to transfer the starting fluid to the manifold jets, of which a varied range to suit different manifolds is now available.

Caltex capsules for the primer are produced by the Regent Oil Co„ Ltd., 117 Park Street, London, WA. Up to 35 c.c. of fluid can be discharged by a new type of primer made to suit large engines of 10 litres and over used in exceptionally cold climates.

Two.speed Drill A TWO-SPEED fin, power drill has ft been produced by Wolf Electric Tools, Ltd., Hanger Lane, London, W.5, for various garage applications. It is stated that when drilling deep fin, holes in hard material, extremely high penetration speeds can be obtained by drilling a fin.Rilot hole. The drill is known as the model T524c.

Quick Starting nOUBLE-POLE. beater plugs: which I-1 are stated to allow an engine to be started within 10 seconds in cold temperatures have been introduced by Lodge Plugs, Ltd., Rugby.' They are used in conjunction with a new type of ballast resistance which reduces the time needed for heating up. Plugs of this type are being fitted by the British Motor Corporation.

Masking Tape 131 E R.. ACEL 93 is a paper masking I tape specially developed by Johnson and Johnson (Great Britain), Ltd., Trading Estate, Slough, Bucks, for spraypainting work. The backing material is exceptionally thin, reducing build-up of paint, and the tape is unaffected by most solvents -whilst having good strength characteristics.

Fast Welding STATED to be suitable for production work on which high output and good weld profile are important, Mirrospeed electrodes for the fast welding of mild steel are now being manufactured by Quasi-Arc, Ltd., Bilstoo, Staffs. They are made in sizes ranging from 12 s.w.g. 4 s.w.g., or D.C.

and are for use on either A.C.

Approved by Lloyd's and the Ministry of Transport, Mirrospeed electrodes are claimed to be capable of being used for flat and horizontal-vertical welding and flat butt welding, and that their good slag detachability enables deslagging to be kept to a minimum.

Towing Cradle ADEVICE for towing vehicles with independent front suspension and which consists of a U-shaped tubular frame and a hylon sling has been introduced by Mann, Egerton and Co., Ltd.,

5 Prince of Wales Road, Norwich. The front of a vehicle is cradled in the frame, the two extremities of which extend back to allow a sling to be tied across the roof.

The front of the frame is hitched on to the tackle of a breakdown tender, and when the frame is raised, the sling becomes taut. The cradle is adjustable in width.
