pETROLand oil-engined passenger chassis are to be produced by the Ford Motor Co., Ltd., from December, They will be based on the Thames Trader goods vehicle range.

The new chassis, which have a wheelbase of 17 ft. 8 in., are rated for a maximum gross vehicle 'weight of 8.1 tons. Complete with Duple 41-seat body, the petrol-engined coach has a kerb weight of 5 tons 54 cwt.—the oil-engined version is 2 cwt. heavier.

The petrol engine is the standard Ford six-cylindered unit, the maximum net output of which is 114 b.h.p. at 3,000 r.p.m. The oil engine offered as an alternative is the 6D, with a maximum output of 100 b.h.p. at 2,500 r.p.m. The maximum torque of both engines is the same-242 lb.-ft. at 1,500 r.p.m.

Gear Ratios With either engine a four-speed synchromesh gearbox is standard, with forward ratios of 6.482, 3.092, 1.686 and 1 to 1, and a reverse ratio of 8.001 to L The rear axle has hypoid-bevel final-drive gearing and the standard ratio is 6.167 to 1, with the option of 5.28-to-1 gearing. An Eaton two-speed axle with electric shift and ratios of 4.5 and 6.25 to 1 is a further option.

The chassis has Girling two-leadingshoe hydraulic brakes assisted by a Clayton Dewandre vacuum servo, and the total friction area is 480 sq. in. Semielliptic springs are fitted at both axles, working in conjunction with lever-type dampers. The chassis frame has fiattopped side-members with a maximum depth of 10 in. and there are six crossmembers. The standard tyres are 8.2520 in. (12-ply) and the turning circle is 65 ft.

Lamps Provided The chassis is supplied without the normal front-end sheet-metal work and bumper, but head and side lamps are provided, mounted on temporary brackets. A spare wheel is supplied, carried on a winch-type carrier on the left of the chassis.

The prices effective for the new chassis are £1,040 for the petrol-engined version and £1,175 for that with the oil engine. No purchase tax is applicable when the chassis are used for operation as passenger vehicles.
