The Local Government Board has availed itself of a recent opportunity, the issuing of a circular letter on the subject of motorcar signs and warnings, to give a plain indication of its views in regard to certain other duties which are, directly or indirectly, incumbent upon those who have charge of the highways of this country. County Councils are told, in no uncertain terms, that the Board desires them to turn their attention to some useful steps towards the better attainment of safety for motor traffic. The circular letter reminds these authorities of the powers which they possess, or can set in motion, for, amongst other things, the removal of obstructions caused by boughs or trees, the cure of illegal encroachments, and the cutting-off and setting-back of corners by the needful alteration of the banks or hedges. It proceeds to explain how much can be achieved as the result of diplomatic negotiation, by means of a friendly agreement with the owners of the property adjoining any road, or by co-operation with other local and rural authorities. Country proprietors of motorbuses will, indeed, read this summary with pleasure, because it is a novelty for them to receive anv_ thing in the nature of official assistance. Taken as a whole, the document contains striking evidence of Mr. John Burns' all-sound qualities as President of the Board.
