THE RHDTC, as the sector's Lead Body is,with support funding from the Employment Department, currently developing a modern apprenticeship scheme for introduction in September 1995. Modern apprenticeships, which will be endorsed by the Employment Department, are intended to create a new generation of skilled workers qualified to N/SVQ level 3 or above. * an apprenticeship pledge between young people and employer which details the training being offered; the prospects of achieving a qualification, and the intended route to a job or job interview.

* flexible arrangements for the time needed to become qualified, varying from two and a half to three years.

* apprenticeships will be offered to young women as well as to young men.

* apprenticeship opportunities will be available in all sectors and occupations, in small, medium and large companies.

Modern apprenticeships will be funded by training credits through local TECs; with the individual trainee signing a contract with his/her employer.
