I WAS shaken when I heard the reason why Ron Boyce, dedicated chairman of the Lorry Driver of the Year Association's National Council, was absent from the annual general meeting at which the disengagement by CM from the competition was announced. He was in hospital after having been beaten-up at a firework party in his own garden in Liverpool. Only incapacity would have kept him away on such an important occasion.

The parting is poignant for those like myself who have been closely connected with both CM and the competition for half a lifetime. The army of volunteers who have sustained the event for 31 years are, however, determined that it shall not die. Indeed, it is to be given a face-lift the better to balance its theoretical and practical elements and to provide greater public interest.

A new limited company is being set up to run it and the financial worries that engulfed the competition before CM underwrote it should not return. A national event devoted to saving life on the road should not have to subsist on the begging bowl.
