Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

More than 30,000 goods vehicles have been recalled by the makers for modifications during the first quarter of operation of the Department of Transport's vehicle recall code announced by Transport Minister Norman Fowler in July.

The number includes 15,223 Ford Transits recalled to have the ignition wiring loom re-routed and 7,000 Volvo F86 vehicles suffering from lowpressure air warning buzzer faults..

The code affects general safety of the vehicle and defects which appear to be present in a "significant" number of yehicles which have been sold in Britain.

Components bought in by vehicle makers are also subject to the code; and the makers must notify the DTp of the fault and the number of vehicles affected as well as the nature of the hazard involved and the action planned to rectify the fault.

DTp may also take the initiative if it is told of a defect, but the primary responsibility lies with the vehicle makers.

The number of recalls reported to the DTp in the first quarter of operation of the scheme is 50 per cent up on the average number of recalls before the scheme was brought into operation.

The 14 campaigns affecting goods vehicles covered 30,245 vehicles and two campaigns covered 94 public service vehicles. All the makers whose vehicles have been affected have written to the owners or keepers using either their own records or those kept by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Centre at Swansea.
