I was most interested to read in CM, November 3, a letter from Mr G. S. Campion, an ownerdriver worried about the effects of the tachograph.
I started my transport career as an owner-driver 21 years ago, and felt similarly frustrated regarding the apparent indifference of large companies and governments to my particular plight.
However, I cannot help but recall that when Barbara Castle introduced the annual vehicle test and plating regulations. At that time this seemed to be a terrible problem for a one-man band to overcome. But, as we all know, these regulations have in fact been of great benefit to our industry, and I suggest that in a few years the tachograph and all problems associated with it will be accepted as normal routine. The tachograph will, I am sure, prove to be another step towards making the Road Haulage industry a more professional organisation.
I believe that owner-drivers still have a great future ahead of them. For instance, my own company operates approximately 40 vehicles and we are seriously considering that any future expansion will be developed around contract owner-drivers, hauling our own trailers.
So don't despair Mr Campion, all the time you can provide a good efficient service economically you will survive. J. L. DAVIES, Managing Director, Hammond & Co Ltd, Redhill, Surrey
