Would it be unkind to describe Tony Painter as a gamekeeper turned poacher? Before he became executive director of the Advertising Standards Authority he was chief trading standards officer for West Sussex County Council.
He has been responsible for safeguarding consumers' legal rights but, he says, he is becoming increasingly concerned about the burden of legislation and bureaucracy affecting the retail motor industry. That is the background to his appointment as director of the Motor Agents' Association's southern region.
He believes that "the best protection for the consumer lies in a strong and competitive industry, subject to self-discipline and operating within a minimum framework of law.He will meet the Press and the region's members in January, when I hope to hear more about his idea of "voluntary selfdiscipline efficiently linked to profitability."
The greatest safeguard for the public is skilled, conscientious labour, but where do you find that?
