LONDON TRANSPORT passengers will pay proportionately less for a better service next year, says the Greater London Council this week.

The Council's London Transport committee is to discuss a proposed eight per cent fares increase for next June at a meeting on Monday.

Planning committee chief Shelagh Roberts said: "Increases in fares are never welcome but this will be the first time in five years that the increase has been kept down to a single figure — and in times of inflation, that is an achievement for the council and for Revenue support from local and national funds is being reduced by £6.5m in real terms but the total budget will permit extra spending on improvements in the standards of vehicles and services.

Among improvements proposed for 1979 is an increase of 2.4m route miles and a £600,000 investment in better supervision of services.

The final decision on LT's capital budget must await the Government's verdict on the GLC's five-year transport programme, expected next month.
