LARGE organisations in transport should do more to counter anti-lorry propaganda. So said DAF Trucks (GB) Ltd managing director Phil Ives when he spoke last week to the National Guild of Transport Managers.
"The large bodies in transport are not making the impact necessary to overcome the anti-lorry lobby. It needs the resources, knowledge, and energy of transport managers employed in the industry to do what they can to make a real case for the road transport industry and all its problems."
He referred to the "sort of prejudices" highlighted by the recent leak of increased lorry weights proposals, and said the industry's managers could do much to counter this.
"There is a real opportunity for managers, both individually and collectively as the Guild, to make an excellent contribution to the furtherance of the industry."
He added: "Nobody spoke up in favour, while many spoke against without appreciating that the level of cost increases incurred by transport managers meant they had got to carry more load behind the driver if they were going to make operations viable.
"There is no other way," said Mr Ives.
