Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

which will require 20-ton 40ft wagons on 10 to 300-mile runs but 1 have no idea what to charge. Could you give me the rates for the work?

A It would be difficult for us to put a precise rate for the traffic you cite. If you are already a road haulage operator you will realize that any rate must reflect

what it costs the haulier to do the job. Without a knowledge of the cost factors involved, therefore, we. cannot advise you what would be the appropriate rate to charge.

There is really no alternative to doing your sums, finding out the cost involved, and charging on that basis. To help you to do this, you might care to obtain a copy of the Commercial Motor Tables of Operating Costs (70p post paid, Cashiers Dept, Book and Sundry Sales Department, IPC Business Press Ltd, 40 Bowling Green Lane, London EC1R ONE).

If you decide that this will be of assistance to you, it is not sufficient to use the figures quoted in the Tables as definitely recommended rates. It is necessary to substitute your own actual costs for those shown in the Tables where this is possible. In this way you will be more able successfully to arrive at a sensible rate for any traffic which you intend to carry.
