• The Institution of Mechanical Engineers has launched a new membership scheme which should reduce the age at which an engineer qualifies for corporate membership, and hence Chartered Engineer status. The scheme requires the organization employing the engineer and the Institution to agree to a four-year programme of training and career development. This programme is monitored k y the Institution to ensure satisfactory progress and that, at the end of the four-year period, he is capable of assuming the responsibilities associated with corporate membership.
Each engineer under training must have a Principal Industrial Tutor nominated by the employing organization and must maintain a written record of the training received. It is mandatory that the student engineer be admitted to student or graduate membership before embarking on the scheme, and agreement to participate in the scheme must be made between all concerned parties within six months of the student engineer joining the employing organization Further details of the scheme are covered in a explanatory brochure entitled "The Industrial Tutor Route to Corporate Membership" obtainable from The Institution of Mechanical Engineers 1 Birdcage Walk, Westminster, London SW I .
