Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Hard on the heels of London Transport's announcement (CM last week) that it is to halt its one-man conversion programme, comes news that Hull Corporation has completely eliminated conductors. The city claims to be the first fleet in the country to be 100 per cent one-man operated.

Hull has 196 Atlantean double-deckers and 27 single-deckers in its fleet. The oneman programme began three years ago when 400 conductors were employed. The Corporation, in conjunction with the Bell Punch Co Ltd, designed the Autofare ticket equipment which is now in use throughout the company. Estimated savings by converting to one-man are 1300,000 a year.
