Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Higher fares and the abandonment of tokens are likely to be early results of the taking over of Sunderland Corporation Transport by the Tyneside PTA— probably in April next year.

On Monday the Authority received a report from the PTE asking that Sunderland Corporation should contribute to reducing the city's transport deficit (about annually, plus Elm outstanding debt) since applying the PTE's fares structure would not in itself make the Sunderland undertaking viable.

Applying PTE scales to Sunderland's present services would leave 40 per cent of fares unchanged, raise about 46 per cent by between lp and 4p, and reduce about 12 per cent by lp or 2p.

Despite a generous discount (16 per cent), the use of fare tokens was reported to be diminishing; the system is losing about £.100,000 a year and the PTE would like to see it abandoned.
