MHERE is further improvement in the iron and steel and allied trades, and a feeling of confidence that the future is most promising. Keen interest is being taken by retailers in springseason merchandise, particularly wool goods. Orders on the books of some manufacturers have doubled, and in some cases trebled, those of a year ago, There is a feeling of optimism in the boatbuilding and marine-engineering trades, which show a steady improvement. The timber trade is active.

Scotland.

Scottish tweed manufacturers report good business, many more looms having been put into operation. There is a demand for knitted woollen goods.

Fife C.C. is to provide for the erection of 644 houses under a four-year scheme.

North-east Coast.

The steady demand in the iron and steel industry still prevails, and more plant is being restarted. Makers of semi-finished steel are working at high pressure. In some branches of finished iron and steel there is more activity than for some considerable time. The Acklam steelworks of Dorman Long and Co., which have been closed for three years, are to be reopened.

The coal trade in the Newcastle district is in a better position than it has been during the past year, all classes of coal being in great demand. Coke also is in request.

A light industry has been launched at Bishop Auckland, providing a new and specialized section of the timber trade. Geo. Robson, Ltd., South Shields, has received an order for the construction of 47 ship's lifeboats. R. Corse and Son, Ltd., Prospect Terrace, Amble, lklorpeth, is to build 200 houSes for Newburn U.D.C.

Yorkshire.

From Sheffield comes the report that the output of cutlery is greater now than at any other period in the history of the industry. Manufacturers of scissors are particularly busy.

Lancashire and Cheshire.

A brewery in Wigan is to be transformed into a factory for the manufacture of basketware. A textile mill in the Rawtenstall district is to be used to introduce new industries.

By-pass roads are to be made at Maghull, Kirkham and Illackrod, and the Preston-Blackpool road is to be widened, the cost being £170,000 and £60,000 respectively. Work is to be started next month on the reconstruction of Southport Pier.

A company has been formed to establish a brick-and-tile works at Upholland, near Wigan. An hotel is to be built fronting Moorfields, Dale Street, and Eberle Street, Liverpool, at an estimated cost of £500,000. Preston T.C. is applying for sanction to borrow £58,000 for the erection of public baths at Saul Street.

Manchester T.C. is to build a block of 181 flats, two shops, a elnbroom and ahall at Smedley Point, Cheetham, the cost being estimated at £83,500. At Hulme 1,076 houses and shops are to be demolished.

Midlands.

The improvement in the iron and steel industry, reported last week, is still maintained, although there is a shortage of supplies of semi-finished steel, owing to the inability of billet-makers to meet the pressing demands now made upon them. There is an all-round improvement in the jewellery trade. The hardware and allied trades remain active.

Hosiery manufacturers appear to have prospects of very good business, and many houses are working overtime. The lace trade is brisk, many large orders having been placed. In the Leicester district the footwear trade is improving. The cycle industry in Birmingham is busy.

The Parkinson Stove Co., Ltd., Stechford, is erecting new buildings and installing additional plant The Slumberland mattress concern is also extending its factory at Tyseley. Newey Bros., Ltd. (small metalware), is completing the construction of a new works, whilst Morland and Impey, Ltd., is about to carry out extensions to its Northfield factory.

In the pottery trade business is improving, the china section being better . than it has been for two years. There is growing activity in the motor factories.

Bainbridge (Builders), Ltd., Stot Lane, Doncaster, is to carry out work in connection with Station Road housing scheme for Sutton-in-Ashfield U.D.C. Messrs, roster and Son are to erect 58 houses on the Hawtonville Estate for Newark T.C. Ritz Cinema (Tuustall), Ltd., proposes to build a cinema at Tunstall, to accommodate 1.600 people.

Notts C.C. is to spend some £26,000 on improving the Mansfield-Alfreton road. The same authority proposes to carry out the following work :—Completion of Nottingham-Bawtry road under the five years' zogramme and the construction of a by-pass road at Ranby.

East Anglia.

Ipswich T.C. is considering a five-year slum-clearance scheme to cost 1850,000. Norwich T.C. is applying for the purchase of properties at Grout's Thoroughfare, and for a clearance order.

Wales.

The tin-plate trade remains steady. It is hoped that plans for the reconstruction of the Cardiff works of the British (Guest, Keen, Baldwins) Iron and Steel Co., Ltd., will proceed in the near future, at an estimated cost of £2,000,000. Negotiations are also going forward for the erection of a factory. in Cardiff, which would be of benefit to the tinplate industry of South Wales.

It is proposed to erect a bacon factory at Carmarthen.

London and Homo Counties.

There are large quantities of timber being delivered to the London docks. The report from the leather market is that trade is steady.

Kentish Town Road is to be widened, at a cost to the L.C.C. of 114,590. Newmarket R.D.C. is to carry out a scheme of slum-clearance involving the demolition of 175 houses and the erection of 149 new houses in the rural area. Brighton T.C. is to complete the widening and reconstruction.of the coast road.

Epsom U.D.C. is considering widening parts of the High Street, at an estimated cost of £100,090. Extensive alterations are to be made to the Connaught Rooms, Great Queen Street, London, W.C., at a cost of 180,000£100,000. Hendon R.D.C. has passed plans for the building of 220 houses at Harrow Weald.

A mixed central school for 360 children and a junior mixed school for 384 children are to be built at Stoneleigh, in the Epsom district, for Surrey E.C. Two new schools are to he erected on the St. Helier Estate, at Carshalton. at an estimated cost of £33,800 and £34,630 respectively. Croydon MC. has approved plans for the building of 120 houses in and about Croydon.
