OFparticular value for use on coaches, which have to maintain steady average speeds under all conditions, is the Curvlite driving light, recently introduced by Elephant Motors, Ltd., 97-103, Newingtou Causeway, London, S.B.1. The lamp may be mounted low down in front of the vehicle, in order to minimize the possibility of dazzle to other road users, and is deflected to the left or right by means of a rod coupled to the drop arm of the steering gear.
The mechanism is of patented design, and working parts are reduced to a minimum, whilst the use of springs is avoided. It is enclosed in a dust and oil-proof housing, the moving parts being contained in an oil-bath.
An interesting feature is the employment of a clutch, which, in the case of a collision affecting the apparatus, automatically puts the lamp out of action and
B42 prevents the locking of the steering gear. We understand that the lamp has been approved by the Ministry of Transport.
The use of this type of equipment is legalized by the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations, which provide that; on and after September 1, 1933, a vehicle may carry a lamp the beam of which may be deflected from side to side. The swivelRag of the device must be dependent upon the movement of the front wheels, and the lamp must be mounted not more than 3 ft. 3 ins, from the ground.
A special commercial model is in production, it being 84 ins, in diameter, with an aluminium front and ribbed glass. The price is £5 Os.
