The owner of a one-man removals business has had his 0-licence revoked with effect from August after he failed to keep his single vehicle at its authorised operating centre.

A public inquiry in Bristol heard how Torquay-based John Mackay used to park his vehicle on Barton Road, at the back of his former home, as it generated business from passers-by.

Appearing for Mackay, who trades as Shift It Removals, Paul Carless said: "It hasn't been a matter of a cavalier attitude towards off-street parking.

"He has never had any complaints from residents, but I have made it clear to him that this is not the point," he added. "it is a very eye catching vehicle. He has had several enquiries as a result of it being parked on Barton Road."

Mackay told the hearing he did not realise that his vehicle had to be kept at the Jetty Road, Newton Abbott operating centre all the time. However, he had previously been warned by the VI.

Western Traffic Commissioner Philip Brown told Mackay that his shortcomings were due to his ignorance of the legislation.

"The operator has to satisfy me that he can operate legally," Brown concluded. "I revoke this licence with effect from 31 July. Mr Mackay will be free to apply for a new licence, and if there are no problems he may not have to make his application at a public hearing."
