• The EC Commission is drafting new legislation to protect workers who handle heavy loads.
In reworking its original proposals, the Commission has heeded a call from the European Parliament that new rules should not be limited to back injuries. It now plans to extend protection to the manual handling of loads involving a risk of any musculoskeletal injury.
The proposed legislation also reinforces workers' rights to be informed by employers about their rights under the legislation, and to information about the weight and difficulties involved in tackling particular tasks. In a bid to achieve better monitoring of how the rules are operating, members states will have to provide reports to Brussels every two years after the rules come into force.
