• Hundreds of would-be Scottish lorry drivers face delays of up to six weeks for their provisional HGV licences, following a fire at the Scottish Traffic Area Office in Edinburgh.
The fire caused extensive damage and has disrupted the issue of licences to HGV and PSV drivers. But John Bannister, clerk to the Licensing Authority, says that none of the records have been destroyed.
"With overtime and weekend working it will take us a month to six weeks to clear the backlog. Those who applied for licences in the two weeks or so preceding the fire will be the worst affected because their paperwork was caught in the mess." he says.
Bob Armstrong of the Scot
tish FTA says that only firsttime applicants for provisional licences will be affected by the delays: "If they have no licence at all they will not be able to drive," he says. "But as long as applications to renew licences are in on time, drivers can carry on as normal."
