• North London-based Fastway International Transport is on the verge of a takeover deal as part of an expansion plan for its Middle Eastern and Turkish business.
FIT plans to buy Alec Lawrence of Ashford, Kent, and will,. pull Lawrence's six trucks out of Europe to concentrate on the Middle East and Turkey with an increase in its general haulage fleet to 20.
The company, which was
founded in September 1989, is looking for 10 other owneroperators for work in Eastern Europe, Turkey and the Middle East to join its existing 15 drivers, and it is seeking a Turkish partner to arrange backloads.
There are plans to acquire a site in Holland or Belgium by the end of next year, but FIT does not plan to expand into the UK market, which it says is too badly paid.
