• More than 200 jobs are to be axed at AWD's Dunstable manufacturing plant; reducing the workforce by nearly 25%.
In all 112 hourly-paid workers will go, along with 108 staff. "We are looking to achieve all redundancies by voluntary means over the next four months," says the firm.
AWD blames the cutbacks on a flagging vehicle market and the end of in-house powertrain manufacturing.
The firm previously made its engines, gearboxes and axles; now it uses proprietary components from specialists such as Perkins, Cummins, Eaton and Rockwell.
A five-day working week will be re-introduced at the Dunstable site, which has been running for only three or four days a week.
