Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Exel Logistics has moved into book transport with the acquisition of Britain's largest independent book distributor.

Distribution and Management Services, based in Kent, has a turnover of £54m, handling books for companies such as Mills and Boon and BBC Books. It also transports video and audio cassettes.

DMS will now come under the umbrella of Exel's Newsflow operation and will be renamed Exel Logistics — DMS. The firm has a large warehousing site in Larkfield and employs 180. DMS founder David Boorman, will stay on with the company as a consultant.

Sister NFC firm Lynx previously handled DMS's distribution. Newsflow's fleet of vehicles, which work on night newspaper deliveries, will be used to handle daytime book distribution.

Exel Logistics marketing director David Buck says this is "the next logical step in our planned expansion into print and media distribution in its broadest sense".

D Exel has won a two-year logistics management contract with Galerias Preciados, Spain's second largest depart

ment store chain. This follows a 12-month assessment programme by Exel, which plans to improve the store's use of warehousing space and materials handling. Galerias has a distribution centre in Madrid with 30 stores in mainland Spain and three on the Balearic Islands.
