• Parcels carrier Lynx plans to shift the thrust of its business away from express parcels into semi-dedicated parcels, which could bring it into direct competition with sister firms BRS and Exel Logistics.
A new division, Lynx Specialist Services has been set up to increase semi-dedicated parcel business from 7% to over 50% in the next five years.
Lynx has been finding trading tough in the fiercely competitive parcels market and until two years ago, was consistently making a loss.
The new division gives large customers access to dedicated vehicles as well as its existing network of almost 40 depots and a 1,400-strong vehicle fleet. It is aimed at companies placing contracts of at least two years, which are worth about 2500,000. "We will be working with our sister companies as far as possible — but if our customers want one supplier for contract-distribution and parcels then we will offer this," says Lynx sales and marketing director Kevin Appleton. The division currently has 12 customers, with contracts worth about £6m in total. It has 10 staff which will increase to 20 by the end of the year.
Lynx's existing fleet is predicted to increase by 1-2% in the next couple of years.
