LIKE ITS Tory predecessor, the Government has no intention of banning road freight during summer weekends.
Prohibitions during June, July and August were suggested in the Commons by Mr Bob Cryer (Labour, Keighley), who supported his plea by quoting the experience of West Germany.
But Mr Fred Mulley, the Transport Minister, turned down the idea. Goods vehicles in this country averaged only four per 'cent of traffic on Saturdays, he said, so the problem was not a major one.
