CLOSE finishes marked the largest classes in last Sunday's round of the Lorry Driver of the Year contest at Newcastle upon Tyne. The overall winner, decided under the indek:of-performance system, was H. Coleby (Thos. Bell and Son Ltd.), driving a Bedford, who was outstanding among the three entries for Class F2; his total penalty marks were 224. Overall runner-up was D. Reed (Newcastle Co-op Society Ltd.) with a•Karrier in Class Fl, whose debit totalled 130, the second lowest loss of the day. Reed was the winner of his class at Newcastle last year. Lowest penalty points this time were 120, those of R. Robert Greaves (W. H. Smith and Co. Ltd.), Bedford, winner of Class B.

J. Hood (British 'Road Services Ltd.), Seddon, repeated his 1962 success in Class G. P. Shore (British Oxygen Co. Ltd.), Bedford. second this year in Class El, was last year's class winner.

An appreciable lift was given to the winning team, from the British Oxygen Co. Ltd., by the low penalty of 132 marks incurred by K. Gray, Albion, against tough opposition in Class D.

Although there were 98 entries. with 17 teams, the tests moved methodically throughout the competition, and by 3 p.m. all concerned were moving away from the parade ground of Fenham Barracks towards the prize distribution by Alderman J. Jacobson, Lord Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne.

The morning stalled with the five oral questions on the Highway Code and one on drivers' hours, subjects on which many

of the competitors showed they could just not be caught out. .Then followed the observed 15-mile road circuit. Among those who lost no marks at all On either of these two sections was the ultimate winner of Class E2,. T. Millar (Post Office Supplies, Edinburgh), Albion. In like case were the runners-tip in Class D, G. A. E. Dixon (Beechams Foods Ltd.), Bedford, and D. C. Povey. (Scottish and Newcastle Breweries Ltd.), Leyland; also from Class H, A. MacKenzie (Shell-Mex and B.P. Ltd.), A.E.C..

Scoring was good generally on the kerb test, R. Greaves (W. IT. Smith and Co. Ltd.), Bedford, being one to put up a perfect performance. But he was run close by J. Dixon (W. H. Smith and Co. Ltd.), Bedford, and I. Laidler (Scottish and Newcastle Breweries Ltd.), Commer. Others above the average included Coleby, Povey, Gray, W. Bennett (Schweppes (Home) Ltd.), Bedford, and E. H. Cowen (Joseph Lucas (Sales and Service) Ltd.), Austin.

Width. judging took heavy toll of many competitors and, although correctly assessed, the debits sometimes appeared .severe in relation to the practical possi

bilities of the individual vehicle. A.T.'
