nNE of the reasons put forward for an

application for a B licence at Manchester last Monday was that the operator concerned realized that some of his business might be bordering on illegality. Rochdale Caravan Services Ltd. wanted four vehicles of 7 tons, these including three Land-Rovers and one flat, to tow and carry caravans, trailers and ancillary equipment to all main United Kingdom ports, Scotland, North and South Wales, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cheshire, Devon, Cornwall, Southern Counties and the Lake District.

Mr. D. C. Alderson, managing director, stated in evidence. that Rochdale had four associated companies, namely Trailvil Ltd., Altrincham Caravan Services Ltd., Aintree Caravan Services Ltd. and Coronet Caravans Ltd. Rochdale retailed, distributed and reconditioned caravans, and at present its vehicles were C-licensed, , and , so were unable to do

Manufacturers were having difficulty in 'arranging for vans to be delivered to customers, he continued, .and if they could deliver chassis and collect caravans in one journey it would help. The company stored and maintained caravans during the winter months, and business had increased by 20 per cent over the past year. Export trade was spasmodic and the company had no intention of trying to enter the haulage industry.

Mr. J. Booth, objecting for 22 private road operators, asked if Mr. Alderson had taken legal advice when he had acquired his C licence. The witness replied that he had not and Mr. Booth added that he did not sound as if he was fit to hold a licence. "Recently I was reported to a North Western traffic examiner for carrying for hire and reward on a C licence. I took legal advice, realized that a B licence was what I needed, and the application stemmed from this ", said Mr. Alderson. At this juncture Mr. H. Bewick, taking the place of the North Western deputy Licensing Authority, cautioned the applicant.

When questioned as to whether or not he had used other hauliers when Rochdale Caravan Services ' were not available. Mr. J. Taylor, managing director of Coronet Caravans, told Mr. Booth that he had not recently, wanted to use Hoyland and Stanley Ltd. one of the objectors. Witnesses from Trailvil and Aintree ,Caravan Services said that their transport problems were looked after by-the -applicants. The case is to be continued. •

Transporter Bid was Refused I AST. week, in a report .entitled

"Transporter Decision Reserved ", it was stated that the East ' Midland Licensing Authority, Mr. C. R. Hodgson, reserved his decision in an application by Progressive Deliveries Ltd. for a total of 20 B-licensed car transporters. In fact, Mr. Hodgson refused the application.
