AGOOD example to other hauliers, and, maybe, some ancillary operators, is being set by the well-built and carefully laid out depots of British Road Services. The latest of these, at Spring Street. Bedminster. Bristol, was formally opened. last Friday by the Lord Mayor of Bristol in the presence of Maj.-Gen. G. N. Russell, C.B:, C.B.E., chairman B.R.S., Mr. J. Frecguard, divisional manager, Western Division, and many other officials and guests.
Built on a site taken over by B.R.S. in 1953, when it was a waste of bombed residential property, the original temporary " depot " of three Nissen huts has been replaced by a fine set• of offices, a capacious warehouse, covered loading and unloading bays, including a security one, a maintenance shop to accommodate six vehicles—later to be extended to take 12—and a wellsurfaced yard of 10,000 sq. ft.
Backing-up space is provided for 16 vehicles and the platform can be completely closed by roller shutters. Between the traffic office and the platform, which are at the same level, is a corridor giving access to the security hay and covered part of the`yard, an space for five drivers' report hatches.
The workshop is well equipped for normal running maintenance with Tecalemit lubricators, hydraulic press, light welding plant, etc., and three welllit inspection pits. Attention is given here to both attached and visiting vehicles and trailers. Housed on two floors, ample space is afforded for office and spare-parts stores.
Amenities for staff and drivers include an attractively arranged canteen to seat 60, in two dining rooms.
Control of all B.R.S. general haulage io Bristol is by the Bristol branch. which is responsible for some 250 vehicles, The capacities ranee from 10 cwt. to 16 tons and about half are• housed at Bedminster.
From Bedminster operate mainly, trunk and distribution services, the former by night to many centres, such as London, Glasgow, Plymouth and Newport. Daily distribution is made within 35 miles of Bristol, but tramp and local services operate from another depot at Dags Road.
