ONE of the first major installations of the American Tote bulk materials handling system has been completed at the factory of Winthrop Laboratories, Ltd., Newcastle upon Tyne, by Pressoturn, Ltd., Leamington Spa, English licensees. It is for the regular delivery of granulated sugar from a refinery at Poppleton,
Yorks. , Units used in the Tote system comprise a bin, available in three sizes, a spinner head, jolter and a tilt discharger. The bins arc made in heavygauge light alloy. Sizes in which they are made are 42 Cu. ft., 74 cu. It. and 110 cu. ft, but for each type the standard filling aperture is of 9 in. diameter and the discharge door measures 2 ft. 10 in, by l ft. 24 in. Special gaskets and fasteners are pro vided for dtist and weather sealing, .
The spinner head and jolter are designed to ensure full loading of the bins when .fine powders _are being handled. The spinner head throws material to the sides of the bin to form a level load, and the jolter vibrates thebin -once _every ' three seconds. Batchweighing . devices can be incorporated
in filling equipment.
The tilt discharger tips a loaded bin to the required angle for emptying, A bin may be placed on the appliance by means of a fork-lift truck, and when tilted a key is: inserted through the hopper of the discharger to open the door. Gravitytype equipment is used for free-flowing material, but screw-type devices may be employed if required. Vibrator units can be provided to ensure complete unloading of fine powders..
Winthrop Laboratories, Ltd., employ a Foden eight-wheeler in conjunction with the system, and this vehicle can carry two rows each of five bins, the net weight of sugar being 15 tons. The time taken to unload the vehicle is 14 minutes, which is much shorter than Would be required for unloading bag sugar.
When the Foden is unloaded, it is free to work as a normal platform vehicle, and the company have thus avoided the need to employ an expensive vehicle with fixed container' type bodywork.
The size of bin employed is 74 cu. ft.. and a unit of this capacity can contain 30 awt. of sugar.
When the Tote system ii applied, bins cart be used for storage until the materials are actually required, and the units lend themselves to mechanical handling. A further advantage mentioned by Pressoturn, Ltd., is that customers can benefit from bulk-supply discounts but need not be tied to suppliers who can deliver with special vehicles.
